Hate Crimes
The City of Hyattsville is proud of its diversity. People of all backgrounds contribute to our community every day - and we are all better off because of it. But for Hyattsville to remain the safe and welcoming place that it is, residents must speak up against prejudice, discrimination and hate.
What Is a Hate Crime?
In Maryland, a criminal act is considered a hate crime if it's intended to hurt or threaten a person, or damage their property, because of a person's:
- Race
- Color
- National Origin
- Gender and/or Gender Identity
- Religion
- Sexual Orientation
- Disability
- Homeless Status
Additionally, students engaged in bullying, harassment, or intimidation in grades K-12 or at institutions of higher education could be subject to disciplinary action under the student code of conduct for the local school system, college, or university. Discrimination and sexual harassment in the workplace, as well as cyber-bullying and online intimidation, are also prohibited by state law.
What Should You Do If You Are the Victim of, or Witness to, a Hate Crime?
First: Report the incident to the Hyattsville City Police Department. If the crime is in progress, call the emergency number: (301) 985-5050. If not, call the non-emergency number: (301) 985-5060.
The Prince George's County Human Relations Commission also investigates discrimination in housing, the workplace, and public accommodations. If you feel that you or someone you know is the victim of such discrimination, please call (301) 883-6170.
The State of Maryland also has a hate crime hotline you can call to report incidents. That number is 1-866-481-8361.
