Inspections (Business & Residential)

All commercial businesses and residential rental units must apply for a license from the City, and renew the license annually. All businesses in the City of Hyattsville must renew their licenses by June 30 of each year. Upon application for the license, or license renewal, the property will be inspected.

If code violations are found during the inspection, a violation notice will be issue, including an explanation of the violation(s), the required correction(s), and the date by which all corrections must be made. After the compliance date has passed, an inspector will re-visit the property to ensure all corrections have been made. The City seeks voluntary compliance from all commercial residential property owners in meeting standards, and is willing to provide extensions to ensure corrections are made without assessing a penalty. However, chronic failure to correct code violations can result in fines ranging from $100 to $500 for a first offense and $200 to $1,000 for second and subsequent offenses.
