Meet the YAC members
Emily Amaya Northwestern High School | " I have lived in Hyattsville my whole life, but my family is from Guatemala, and I don’t know much about it but I’m willing to learn. I enjoy movies and I absolutely love art which is why I like how artsy this town is. I am aspiring to become an animator since I love drawing and painting myself. I have volunteered with the city at their craft tables in the past and look forward to assisting again in the future. I believe youth can make a difference in local government by providing a new perspective to government. If you are interested in joining the YAC, I would suggest signing up for the youth leadership program and trying your best! I look forward to the impact we will have on the community." |
Gabriella Lemus Northwestern High School | "My name is Gabriella Lemus, and I am going into the 11th grade at Northwestern High School. I'm a Puerto Rican-Guatemalan Latina that grew up in Hyattsville and I have done volunteering with the City on multiple occasions and volunteered with the Hyattsville Branch Library. My goal is to go D1 in tennis and, when I am older go to UMD or John Hopkins to study illustration, graphic design, and cosmetology. I believe youth who join the YAC can make a difference in local government by listening to their peers and considering different possibilities to advocate for. For those interested in joining the council I would suggest being up to date on local news and what is happening in the City and being passionate about making change!" |
Northwestern High School | "I'm a Salvadoran Latina and grew up in Hyattsville. I have volunteered at various City of Hyattsville events. I aspire to become a veterinarian and/or get my certification to become a babysitter and open my own daycare. My interests are playing badminton, drawing, reading, and listening to music. I can make a difference in my local government by using my voice to speak up about issues that matter to me, volunteering, being involved with the community, and encouraging others to do the same. If you are interested in joining the YAC, take the opportunity to join the City of Hyattsville’s drop-in center to practice your leadership skills and how to use your voice. Something important I have learned is to always stay informed, listening different points of view, and, most importantly, get involved. I look forward to making an impact for my peers and the younger generations." |
Andres Espinal Northwestern High School | "I have lived in Hyattsville since I was seven and my family is from El Salvador. I will be joining the football team this year and I aspire to be an NFL football player one day. In my free time, I enjoy going out with friends or playing football. I look forward to working with my peers to make a difference for youth like me in our community." |
Christopher Callejas Northwestern High School | "I have lived in Hyattsville my entire life. I enjoy listening to music, doing magic, and spending time with my family. I am interested in becoming a computer engineer in the future. Through my opportunity with the council, I hope to make a positive change for those around me now and for those in the future." |
Emily Sagastume Northwestern High School | "I have lived in Hyattsville my whole life and I have volunteered in doing clean-ups around the city and helping at events at the library. I aspire to have a career in Food and Nutrition Sciences. In my free time, I enjoy listening to music, baking, and spending time with cats. I am looking forward to participating in the Youth Advisory Council and making positive changes for our community." |
Christopher Jimenez Northwestern High School | "I have lived in Hyattsville for most of my life. I am a person who is interested in guitar, music, drawing, and voice acting. I am hopeful to complete my dream of the Cateye Project, a band I have been working on. I am very dedicated to those around me, and I hope to help make Hyattsville a safe place for everyone." |
Avory Boyce Northwestern Highschool | "I lived in D.C. until I was 7 years old, and then I moved to Hyattsville. While living in Hyattsville I’ve volunteered at several City events. I am interested in hands-on trades that vary from carpentry and woodworking to working on vehicles. I am prepared to make a difference in local government by showing a different perspective and helping voices often not heard. I look forward to standing up for my peers and others in the community." |
Angel Guzman Northwestern Highschool | "I have lived in Hyattsville for 11 years and my family is Hispanic. I am interested in doing Tech as a career in the future, but for the time being my interests are gaming, gardening, painting, and playing music. I believe we can help the local government by addressing issues in the community that affect and need our attention. If you are interested in joining the council, remember that listening to the community and helping them out through volunteering is important. I hope to help those around me and make Hyattsville a positive place for everyone." |
