Public Works Department

The Hyattsville Department of Public Works is a service agency on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year, providing service to the citizens of the City.

The Department of Public Works is also responsible for Trash and Recycling Pickup. Residential refuse totals over 6,000 tons per year.

Over 40 pieces of equipment -- trucks, road equipment and machines -- are necessary to keep the Department operating and providing these services. The maintenance of this equipment is performed by City employees at our maintenance garage.

Trash and Recycling
All kinds of trash: (household, bulk, "special bulk", and hazardous) as well as recycling (paper or plastic, leaves and trees) are covered here.

Load-A-Truck Program
In July 2000, the City began the Load-A-Truck Program to help homeowners clean up their yards on the weekends.

Streets and Sidewalks

The construction and maintenance streets, sidewalks, curbs and gutters for safe travel over 50 miles of city-maintained streets is the responsibility of the Public Works Department.

Street maintenance (including signs) is handled on an as-needed basis. The City's Pot Hole Patrol is dispatched for street repairs.

Residents are encouraged to report any conditions which represent a safety or sanitation hazard.

Snow and ice removal are treated as an emergency situation.

Public Works also maintains the City's parks.

Tree planting, trimming and removal (as well as the collection and composting of leaves in the fall) are handled by Public Works.
