About HOPE
HOPE (Hyattsville Organization for a Positive Environment) encourages Hyattsville residents to work towards protecting the environment;
creating a sense of community; and building a healthy local economy. HOPE
strives to achieve these goals through education, activities and advocacy.
In particular, we bring lively and topical speakers to present information
to City residents. We host forums on a variety of compelling issues such as
TRIM and the shape of future potential development in the region. We educate
citizens through articles and discussions on varied topics: from composting
to the past, present and future state of the Northwest Branch of the
Anacostia. We organize and execute stream and street clean-ups. We
collaborate with and assist the City of Hyattsville on projects and research
whenever we are asked and are available to help. We advocate for improved
pedestrian access to Metro and walkability throughout the City. We insist
that our City government be as open and inclusive as possible.
Like the City of Hyattsville itself, HOPE members represent a broad
cross-section of our population with a diversity of views and philosophies,
including several former and current City Councilmembers. As an
organization, HOPE is non-partisan and in our five year life as an
organization, we have never supported a candidate for any office.
HOPE has hosted four "Meet the Candidate" forums, in which citizens were
able to ask Hyattsville City Council and Mayoral candidates questions in an
civil, orderly format. These forums were televised on the cable channel and
were heavily attended.
One of HOPE's most successful on-going endeavors is the HOPE listserv (a
free e-mail list for sharing information about local events and issues
effecting the citizens of Hyattsville). You can subscribe to this listserv
by sending a blank e-mail message to: join-hope@lyris.rtk.net
We would like to invite any citizens interested in making Hyattsville a great place to live to join HOPE and to use your energy in a
positive way. For more information about joining HOPE, please contact
Treasurer Stuart Eisenberg at (301) 779 1426.
