History of Hyattsville

Important Dates in Hyattsville History

1860
The City was founded by and named after Christopher Clarke Hyatt, who settled here sometime before 1860.

1886
Hyattsville was incorporated by an act of State Legislation on April 7, 1886. The first Town Commissioners were elected in 1886 and held their first meeting on May 10, 1886.

1888
The Hyattsville Volunteer Fire Department was founded. They responded to their first fire at 10:30am on October 6, 1888.

1900
In 1900, the Town sought and received authorization from the General Assembly to implement a Mayor and Common Council form of government. The first mayor was elected in May of 1900. The first meeting was held on May 14, 1900.

1913

1943
On March 23, 1943, the corporate name was changed from Mayor and Common Council of Hyattsville to Mayor and City Council of Hyattsville by bills enacted by the General Assembly.
