Important Dates in Hyattsville History
- 1860

The City was founded by and named after Christopher Clarke Hyatt,
who settled here sometime before 1860.
- 1886
- Hyattsville was incorporated by an act of State Legislation on April 7, 1886.
The first Town Commissioners were elected
in 1886 and held their first meeting on May 10, 1886.
- 1888
- The Hyattsville Volunteer Fire Department was founded. They responded to
their first fire at 10:30am on October 6, 1888.
- 1900
- In 1900, the Town sought and received authorization from the General Assembly
to implement a Mayor and Common Council form of government.
The first mayor was elected in May of 1900.
The first meeting was held on May 14, 1900.

- 1943
- On March 23, 1943, the corporate name was changed from Mayor and Common Council of Hyattsville to
Mayor and City Council of Hyattsville by bills enacted by the General Assembly.
